Estimate the ongoing work
A homegrown collector needs source discovery, change handling, monitoring, retries, schema maintenance, and review when pages change. These costs continue after the first prototype.
Understand what a provider would need to prove
Request a representative sample and evaluate source scope, field completeness, lifecycle evidence, freshness definitions, terms, and delivery. A polished demo cannot answer these questions alone.
Compare equivalent scopes
Use the same sources, markets, roles, date window, and required fields for both options. Track engineering time and the effort to handle failures, not only initial build time or subscription price.
Plan for source restrictions
Public pages and platform APIs can have different access rules. Confirm rights, attribution, redistribution, and retention for the exact workflow before collecting or purchasing data.
Make a reversible decision
Start with a narrow pilot, document acceptance criteria, and preserve an exit path.
Turn the guide into an evaluation brief
List the sources, markets, fields, and intended use you need to assess.
